Start with the "big three" when You are trying to reduce weight. If You cut the weight in half for all the little pieces of ultralight backpacking gear that You have, it might save You a pound. A good light weight tent or tarp to replace You r six-pounder can save You up to five pounds. So look at You r backpack, shelter and sleeping bag first, then move on to the other gear. I thought my 3-pound, 2-ounce sleeping bag was light, until I found a 17-ounce bag that keeps me even warmer.
Ultralight Gear Can Be Fragile
Remember too, that often ultralight backpacking gear is more fragile than ordinary gear. Keep that in mind when You are buying the gear and when You are planning a trip. My Frogg Toggs rainwear is great, but it is papery, and I might leave it behind if I go on a trip that involves pushing through a lot of thick brush.
